Barefoot Sailing Adventures – it all started with a dream!

From Sailing Adventures, ocean adventures and romantic escapes. It’s always been our dream to share our love of sailing, and now with Barefoot Sailing Adventures, we can! Romantic, exhilarating, relaxing – sailing offers you so many different kinds of experiences.

Keen sailors Luke and Rachael have an enduring history with the sea. Salt in our blood, you might say. After spending many years working in the sailing charter industry in Australia and New Zealand, it was time to turn the dream of owning our own charter yacht into a reality.

Opportunities had come and gone, until one came up that was too good to pass up. We finally found the right boat – a 33ft Tennant Turissimo sailing catamaran.  We knew we had our work cut out for us, but nothing beats a good challenge. She’s a proven performer, having spent many years racing around the Hauraki Gulf before settling on Lake Taupo. This little gem was meant to be ours. We would give her a new lease on life, and finally get to share our love of sailing and the sea.

The great New Zealand coastline was calling. Also a new paint job, a total refit, and a Certificate of Survey to operate the vessel commercially. With the Bay of Islands in our sights, a world renowned sailing destination, those beautiful sea breezes and sheltered waters, we set to work.

So after 3 years in the making, Barefoot Sailing Adventures is launched in Summer 2016!

Time to Live The Dream!

Meet The Barefoot Crew

The Boat, Kopiko – Kiwi all the way!

To zig zag, to meander, to wander. This is the meaning of the name Kopiko, and she surely lives up to her name!

This beauty sails with style, grace and flair. She is a comfortable cruiser, happily skipping along the waves at a gentle pace, eagerly awaiting a good stiff breeze where she comes into her own. Then we can really open her up, for an exhilarating, fast pace, to give our passengers a taste of sailing the Barefoot way!

This edgy catamaran, a Turissimo 10, was designed in the early 1980’s by forward-thinking New Zealand designer, the late Malcolm Tennant. She was built as part of his range of performance multihull designs which are popular world-wide. Built by a New Zealand boat builder, Wayne Robson in his own backyard, she was launched in 1991. Kopiko was one of the first multihulls in the world to be designed and made of strip-plank cedar composite construction, which is now so common.

It was here that his love of sailing catamarans began when he Skippered Straycat, 35ft Woods Ocean Spirit.

Meet Barefoot Rachael

Barefoot Rachael wears many hats – captain, crew, manager and adventurer. At a young age Rachael fell in love with the sea. Sailing was part of growing up in the seaside town of Whangarei, and the Bay of Islands was her big back yard.  After years of dreaming the dream she finally packed up the scissors and finished her hairdressing career to pursue an exciting new career in sailing charters.

She joined many boats as crew to gain experience in the charter industry. Which then led her on to study for Skipper license. Then landed her first job as Skipper aboard Fearless, a 36ft cutter rigged ketch, sailing on the great Lake Taupo.

Join Barefoot Rachael for a day of adventure, laughter and smiles!
